The Largest Species of Sea Turtle

If you are interested in knowing what the largest sea turtle is, then you should know that it is the leatherback sea turtle. These sea turtles can reach a length of over six and a half feet. In most species of animals, the male and female are different sizes, but this is not true for the leatherback sea turtle species. Both the male and the female of this species are the same size. These kinds of turtles can live to be up to 80 years old. Now, this is providing that they are living in oceans that are safe from pollution. The oil and pollution that tends to get into oceans can greatly decrease the lifespan of these kinds of turtles.

Why Sea Turtles are a Mystery

Sea turtles are one of the species of animals that we do not know a lot about. This is because they spend almost their entire lives in the ocean. As soon as the baby sea turtles hatch from their eggs, they begin to make their way to the ocean. They do not return to the shore unless they are a female and are about to lay eggs. They then dig a hole in the beach to lay their eggs in, and cover them up with sand once they have been laid. The female sea turtle then returns back to the ocean, and she does not come out again unless she needs to lay more eggs.

Why Sea Turtles are Endangered

Sea turtles are considered to be an endangered species because they are unable to survive in the pollution and oil spills that are in the oceans. There are many different issues that can arise if a sea turtle survives in water that has had an oil spill happen. Sea turtles run the possibility of losing their skin if they stay in oily waters. They can also become poisoned, which will eventually cause death if they are not found and quickly taken care of. Since there have been so many oil spills, the sea turtles are losing a lot of their habitat, and this is what is causing them to be an endangered species.

Green sea turtles are one of the most interesting species out of all of the sea turtles. These creatures are able to stay under the water for an entire five hours if they have to. Of course, it typically does not take them that long to find food, so in most cases, they are only underwater for a few minutes at a time. You may be wondering how it is possible for an animal that breathes oxygen to stay underwater for so long. This is because green sea turtles are able to slow their heartbeats down in order to save oxygen. If they have to, green sea turtles can slow their bodies down so much that their heart beats once every nine minutes.

Choosing the Right Pet Turtle

Most kids have had pet turtles. Pet turtles are easy to care for once you know which species you have. If you are purchasing a pet turtle for the first time, then you should take the time to search for information of all of the different species that you can find. If you are getting a turtle for your child, then you may want to make sure that you choose a species that is easy to care for. One of the most popular species that is used as a pet is the Box Turtle. If you have had turtles before as pets, and you are able to care for a turtle that is more difficult to care for, then you may decide to get one of these as a pet.
